RIGeL Application

According to the doctoral regulaions § 35 II, 1 every PhD student must apply for a RIGeL membership within the first three months after starting the PhD. Because of several exceedances of deadline the Doctoral Committee reserves the right to charge additional fees in case of failed deadline of application in the future. The regulation applies to every RIGeL registration which comes in after the 31st of July 2013 and exceeds the deadline of 3 months. The doctoral committee of the Medical Faculty determines whether all Medical Faculty requirements have been fulfilled. If they accept your application, they will send it to the Biology and Preclinical Medicine Faculty administration office.

PhD qualification exam (Promotionseignungsprüfung)

If the doctoral committee is not sure whether you have the precognition to start a PhD, you will be required to pass a qualification exam (see doctoral regulations §§ 6, 25).

The exam consists of an oral and a written part.
The oral test must be passed in three of the following subjects, whereby each subject will be examined by a different examiner: Biochemistry, Bioinformatics, Biophysics, Botany, Genetics, Microbiology, Neurobiology, Cell biology, Zoology. The duration of the oral examination is about 90 minutes. All three examiners must be present at the examination. The examination is passed if the grade average of all three subjects is at least 2.5.

The written test is a scientific project, conducted at the faculty after the oral test and should take no longer than six months. A thesis (Diploma, Master or equivalent), already performed by the student, is accepted as equivalent.

Successfully passed tests are only valid for five years. Failed tests may only be repeated once.

Process:

  1. Choose three subjects and examiners and send the proposal to the Biology and Preclinical Medicine Faculty administration office (christa.engl[at]ur.de). The examiner must be a professor, an associate professor or an adjunct professor of the Biology and Preclinical Medicine Faculty.
  2. The application must go through the doctoral committee. The doctoral committee must approve the subject and examiner combination.
  3. After approval, you must arrange the date of the test and inform the Biology and Preclinical Medicine Faculty administration office at least 18 days ahead of time.

FAQ´s

Is there a deadline for the registration to the qualification test (Promotionseignungsprüfung)?
