WIN workshop: Confident Communication in International Research Settings

In international research environments, effective communication is key - especially when navigating challenging conversations. Whether you are giving feedback to a student assistant, raising concerns with a supervisor, or aligning priorities with colleagues from different disciplines or cultures, the ability to communicate clearly, professionally, and constructively is essential.
This interactive workshop supports international doctoral researchers (and early postdocs) in strengthening their practical communication skills for situations that may be unfamiliar - linguistically, culturally, or hierarchically. Using realistic scenarios from their academic or research contexts, participants will develop tools to manage sensitive conversations in English - even when neither conversation partner is a native speaker.
The workshop combines concise input sessions with hands-on exercises, simulations, an peer feedback. Participants are invited to bring examples from their own experiences, ensuring the training is directly relevant to their professional context and communication needs.

Core Topics

  • Understanding common sources of conflict and misunderstanding
  • Active listening and empathy in intercultural settings
  • Clear structuring of arguments and feedback
  • Techniques to reduce tension and build rapport
  • Practical tools applied to participants' real-life situations
