First Summer School 2026: Two inspiring days of science, collaboration, and fun
On March 24 and April 21, the Bioeconomy Lecture Series featured two impactful presentations.
Prof. Dr. Thorsten Hamann from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology - NTNU presented on plant cell mechanics, introducing a novel Brillouin microscope enabling label-free, in vivo analysis of stiffness and viscosity in Arabidopsis thaliana roots. The technology is advancing research into how plant cells adapt mechanically during development and under stress - key to understanding plant responses to environmental changes.

Dr. Tobias May, founder of inscreenex GmbH, unveiled a reproducible, gene-based approach to cell immortalization. Using a custom library of over 30 genes, the method generates functional, long-lived cell lines from more than 20 cell types - including endothelial, epithelial, and neural cells - within 2–3 months. These lines maintain primary-like properties, support genetic engineering, and respond well to 3D culture, enabling personalized cell systems for advanced biomedical applications.

Both talks highlighted innovative technologies with broad implications for sustainable biology and precision medicine.
We extend our sincere thanks to Prof. Dr. Thorsten Hamann and Dr. Tobias May for their inspiring talks and valuable contributions to the series.
